Discord avatar size

What Discord says about avatar size and formats, how the circle crop and status dot affect your picture, and how to make an avatar that reads at chat size.

Recommended Discord avatar size

Discord's own guidance: a simple image around 200 × 200 pixels at minimum, under 10 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF. Avatars are shown as circles.

Discord does not give an exact recommended size, only that minimum. Our frame tool exports Discord avatars at 512 × 512 pixels: comfortably above the minimum and still a small file.

How Discord shows your avatar

Your avatar appears next to every message, in member lists, in voice channels and on your profile card. In chat it is shown very small, so a clear face or a bold simple graphic reads much better than a busy scene.

Discord crops avatars to a circle and places a small status dot (online, idle, do not disturb) over the bottom-right edge. Avoid putting anything important there, including a corner badge.

Profile banner

Discord's same guidance says a profile banner should be at least 600 × 240 pixels, as PNG, JPG or animated GIF, under 10 MB. Part of the banner is hidden behind your avatar. Our tools only make square profile pictures, not banners.

Tips for a Discord avatar that reads well

  • Zoom in further than you would for LinkedIn: head and shoulders, or just your face.
  • Use a strong border colour or gradient ring so the avatar stands out in a long member list.
  • Try a mono or vivid look and a contrasting background for a bolder, stylised feel.
  • Check it at small size: zoom out in your browser until the preview is about the size of a chat avatar.

Server avatars

Discord says Nitro members can use a different avatar and profile banner in each server. The same 512 × 512 export works for those too.
